My Review
Sooo I kinda had a love, hate relationship with this book. For me, it was like Jekyll and Hyde in sense. When it was good, it was really good, but then there were bits that were kind of frustrating or confusing and put me off. Overall, it was a pleasant read with those little bits of hidden gold but it had its flaws.
Autumn (Leafy) is your typical virgin nerd who has moved to college wanting to escape all the taunts and teases from her old life. This new start for her is a new chance at making friends and becoming and entirely different person. Hunter on the other hand has a lot on his plate. He's been dealt a bad card and has to enter fights, deal drugs and beat people up to pay for this unknown reason. In this sense it wasn't your typical fighter story as the lead male had no choice, which kinda lost the appeal a little bit for me, but still ok non the less.
The good points in the book for me was the suspense and the mystery over the characters behaviour, who's behind it all and trying to guess whats really going on with Hunter. These kind of guessing stories really appeal to me and so I felt that this was a good spin on the story. I did like the lead characters mostly as it was opposites attract etc, and both began to open up and come out of their shell a little bit as the story progressed.
The bad points of the story kind of took away the shine for me a little bit. One was the believability of the story and the other was the behavioral aspects of the lead that you wouldn't associate with the stereotypes that you'd place on them. Leafy became heavily involved in the drug aspect of the story and followed Hunter round like a lost puppy. This for me would not happen to a smart girl who you think would know better and try to avoid. While Hunter sometimes came off as a little wimpy with all the crying, again taking the shine of his 'alpha male' persona that we all love. There was also too much going off at once, so sometimes you kind of lost where you were with the book and this got a little confusing.
Overall it was an OK read, but I didn't find myself in love with the story and characters. This is a shame because I absolutely love fighter stories and this story could of had so much more going for it if some things we only slightly changed. There was so much potential for the story with the characters background and plot but I dont feel it fully reached it.
